Daughter of King John of England, sister of King Henry III of England.
Joan was brought up in the court of Hugh X of Lusignan who was promised to her in marriage as compensation for him being jilted by her mother Isabella. On the death of John of England, Isabella decided to marry him herself and Joan was then promised to Alexander II of Scotland.
They were married in 1221 at York Minster. (poss. by Walter de Gray, Archbishop of York and Lord Chancellor to King John of England?) Alexander was twenty-three. Joan was ten, almost eleven.
It is said that she is now buried in a golden coffin in the graveyard at Tarrant Crawford Abbey in Dorset.
